Since the opening of Renaissance I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to write for our local newspaper--The Peninsula Daily News, particularly a special section of our paper called Healthy Living, which appears quarterly. Healthy Living features news, advice, recipes, and other offerings related to health and wellness.
People ask me if the people in my articles are real. Yes! Everyone in the articles is really someone I know or have known in my past. For the sake of my friends, colleagues, and family members, I do change details like names, locations, and in some cases gender or other identifying information. I never write about my massage clients because I consider our professional relationship to be sacrosanct and utterly confidential.
I like to make sure that everyone knows that I am not a medical doctor. I have a PhD in Social Welfare from the University of Washington School of Social Work. I'm not a medical expert but I do have expertise, and practice, in individual and community indicators of health, with lots and lots of training in research methods. As a massage therapist I have been able to fulfill an early dream of studying more anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and other physical health-related fields. The articles you'll read here reflect these two general streams of my own study and practice over the past ummmmmmmmm, thirty-something years.
